The party was started on 3rd September 1951 by the Hon. SWRD Bandaranaike, Sri Nissanka with the participation of the Members of Parliament at the Colombo Municipal Council.
Mr. Badudin who was the Principal of Gampola Zahira confirmed the resolution at that first-party session and The Hon. S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike was elected as the Chairman of the party. Mr. Bernard Aluvihara, Mr. Al-haj Baduddin Mohammed, and Mr. S. S. Thangarajah were elected as Secretaries. Mr. George R. de Silva was elected as the Treasurer.
The party had powered by five great forces which were, Sanga (Monk), Guru (Teacher), Govi (Farmers), Wedha(Medic), and kalamkari(Workers) have begun their journey together and with creating a new episode of Lankan political history.
It is significant because more than 10,000 ethnic groups from all over the country joined the Jayahosha people on the road and outside the festival grounds.
Facing of First Election as a new party
The Sri Lanka Freedom Party, which began in 1951, faced its first election in less than eight months following the unexpected demise of the then Prime Minister, D.S Senanayake. After the demise of Hon. Prime Minister DS Senanayake, his son Hon. Dudley Senanayake assumed duties as Prime Minister. Parliament was dissolved on the 8th of April 1951 by Prime Minister Dudley Senanayake.
In Sri Lanka, Numerically the third parliamentary election was held on 24, 26, 28, and 30, of May 1952, and the party led by the Hon. S.W.R.D. Bandaranayake. He contested the general election with another 47 candidates from the SLFP. Hon. S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike was elected from the Attanagalla electorate with a majority of 34544 votes and SLFP won nine seats in all. At the First Faced Election SLPF was able to win the general election as the Opposition Leader of the Parliament.
First election victory
The Sri Lanka Freedom Party engaged in the General Elections of 1952 and then in 1956 under the leadership of Hon. S. W.R.D. Bandaranayake. This time even the rival political parties got together for a great victory by uniting the five great forces. Sir John Lionel Kotelawala, the 3rd Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, who has led the United National Party in the election in 1956. Out of the 60 candidates contesting the SLFP election that year, 51 were elected to parliament.
With that Greatest victory, Honorable Solomon West Ridgeway Dias Bandaranaike was elected as the fourth Prime Minister of Sri Lanka. His achievements include the appointment of Sinhala as the official language, recognition of the priority of the state enterprise and the nationalization of the private bus business, the establishment of the Sri Lanka Transport Board, the Paddy Lands Act, the nationalization of the Colombo Port, Establishment of the Provident Fund, National Labor Day as a Public Holiday, amendments to the Labor Rights Bill and the introduction of neutral foreign policies, Transforming Vidyodaya and Vidyalankara Pirivenas into Universities, Writing of Tamil Language and Special Provisions Bills for the Rights of Minorities and their Rights.
