He passed away at the age of 88. The completion of 88 years of age is considered sacred by the “Beiju” tradition of Japan.
Teruyuki Okazaki is the founder and chief consultant of the Shotokan Karate. Also, he founded the International Shotokan Karate Federation (ISKF). As well as he got a tenth-dan black belt in Shotokan Karate. This great man will live in thousands of hearts as a distinguished man, mentor, and talented teacher. Also, he exemplified all the qualities of a humble, gentle, and respected master. He is another immortal figure in the karate world. This article is a brief overview of his life.
The early life of Teruyuki Okazaki
on June 22, 1931, Master Teruyuki Okazaki was born in Fukuoka, Japan. He received training in the arts of Aikido, Judo, and Kendo from an early age. After that, at the age of 16 entered Takushoku University. There, Master Okazaki joined the Japanese Karate Association (JKA), where he began karate training under “Master Gichin Funakoshi” and “Master Masatoshi Nakayama”
In 1953, Master Okazaki graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Economics from Takushoku University, Tokyo. Subsequently, in 1955 he collaborated with Master Nakayama to help develop the JKA Instructor Course and he becomes the pioneer of the program that produced the most integrated leaders of the modern Shotokan. Later, he taught at Boi University’s Takushoku University and Tokyo’s Toritsu University as well.
Entry into North America and the Philadelphia Dojo
In 1961, Masatoshi Nakayama sent Master Okazaki to the United States with the aim of internationalizing the Shotokan Karate. As a result, moving to North America, he founded a dojo in Philadelphia and founded the East Coast Shotokan Karate Association in 1963.
Also, in 1977 he founded the International Shotokan Karate Federation (ISKF), which revolutionized the history of karate. ISKF is currently one of the world’s leading karate organizations, with Master Okazaki as president and chief instructor.
International Shotokan Karate Federation (ISKF)
In 1977 Teruyuki Okazaki founded the ISKF. The ISKF is spread across 30 countries and has a membership of over 50,000 members. In April 2007, Okazaki proposed the termination of ISKF’s relationship with JKA and the establishment of an external independent body, with the support of 25 countries. Thus, the ISKF became an independent entity, and its relationship with other countries continued.
Simultaneously, at the Canadian National ISKF Championships in Toronto, Canada, in October 2007, the ISKF Technical Committee promoted Teruyuki Okasaki to the rank of black belt to 10th dan, while Yutaka Yaguchi was promoted to grade 9. Master Okazaki became ISKF’s top-ranked Karate Master, with only a few others internationally at the time.
In 2015, Okazaki retired from ISKF, with Yaguchi serving as chief adviser and Okazaki’s nephew Hiroyoshi Okazaki as chairman. Hiroyoshi Okazaki Shihan is the current ISKF President and chief instructor.
