The Covid-19 epidemic is raging around the world and we face many economic and social challenges. This situation has affected the rest of the world as well as a world power, the United States of America. Sometimes it is far more damaging than other countries. The United States currently accounts for the largest number of cases of Covid-19 in the world. As a result, the general public has come under heavy pressure from the Trump-led government. So President Donald Trump seems to be passing the ball by claiming that China and the WHO is responsible for the current situation. In this backdrop, President Donald Trump announced a massive scientific, industrial, and logistical effort on Friday, May 15, called “Operation Warp Speed.”
Operation Warp Speed
The group, including Trump, called Operation Warp Speed a modern-day Manhattan project, pointing to it as a great responsibility. President Trump joined the heads of the Department of Health and Defense as well as top US infectious disease specialist Anthony Fauci and Director of National Institutes of Health Francis Collins at Rose Garden on Friday to announce the Operation.
Trump has called on American businesses, scientists, the federal government, and the military to work together to achieve this “great national project”. Further, he said together US scientists, military and private pharmaceutical manufacturers will achieve something that has never been achieved before, and that a safe and effective vaccine for the Corona epidemic will be available within a year.
President Trump has nominated an army general and former health care executive to spearhead this operation. Monsef Slawy, who previously led the vaccine unit at Smithkline, will lead the operation, and General Gustav Perna, who oversees the distribution for the United States Army, will serve as chief operating officer.
According to the Department of Health and Human Services, the project aims to provide Americans with a significant and safe vaccine in January 2021. However, the US government’s top infectious disease specialist, Dr. Anthony Fauci, and medical experts are skeptical of Trump’s goal and possible deadlines.
Is it a realistic time frame to find a vaccine?
Drugmakers have announced that they will stop other clinical trials to find an antibody for Covid-19, which has infected more than 5.5 million people and killed more than 3,500,000 people. In that case, Trump’s Operation Warp speed seems to have given the public some relief. However many specialists have said that it will take 12 to 18 months for a special vaccine on the market. Also, the US government’s infectious disease specialist Dr. Anthony Fauci doubted the timing of the warp speed operation. Similarly, scientists and specialists say that the vaccine against Covid-19 may be available, but there are significant logistical challenges in delivering adequate doses to the global population.
And after Trump’s announcement, Dr. Peter Hotez, co-director of Baylor College’s Coronavirus Vaccine Group, told CNN: “I don’t understand how that happens.”
Also, he said.
“I don’t see any way in which any vaccine has been licensed for emergency use or otherwise until the third quarter of 2021.”
Thus, we can conclude that the project initiated by Donald Trump-led government is just one more attempt and that he is not the savior of the Americans and the world. This appears to be merely a matter of narrowing his political aims and securing his power and sacrificing his people for the coming election. His statements contradict each other and its practicality makes us even more suspicious. However, Operation warp speed will be useful in further studying the virus and finding a new vaccine in the future. But we cannot say a certain time frame.
Our journey forward without a vaccine
Our future world will be filled with many challenges. We have to live with the virus without treatment. Many of our loved ones will bid farewell to us. The world economy has collapsed. Jobs will be lost. We will all be subject to the self-determination of nature. But always our right decisions and choices determine our survival. Human history testifies to it from the beginning of mankind to the present day.
What should be done is to follow the advice of scientists including WHO and other accredited health organizations to take steps to prevent the spread of the virus among people. We also need to manage our day-to-day affairs and look for alternatives to escape future economic threats and unemployment. We need to have the technology that the future world needs so that not only Europe but African and Asian countries have to align with the fight against this virus.
We must create a world of humanity in which we can still live in a world that is greedy for power and wealth. Together we will overcome all challenges. Let’s defeat the Curse of Covid-19.
